I have been estimating Vinyl Siding for 23 years and I'll tell you there is nothing to it. All Siding companies estimate there jobs by the square. A square is a term we use in the siding industry that represents 100 square feet of wall coverage on a structure. So a 10x10 area of your exterior wall is referred to as one square.
The industry standard for estimating uses a "per square price" for the total number of squares on a home which includes: all the necessary siding material, including labor, insulation and all trim needed for window overhangs. There can be some variations if a home has an unusual amount of windows or requires a special detail but for the most part everything is by the square.
The First thing to do is walk around your house with a tape measure and note pad and get the width and height of all the walls you can. If you have an overhang add a foot, and on a gable end measure about half way up the peak and that will be your height. Add your widths and heights together to get you total square feet and that's the number of squares you have. That's really all there is to it.
Example - A 40 foot ranch that's 16 feet high in the front has 640 sf or 6.4 squares. When you have the total squares then all you do is multiply by a square price and that's the cost to do your house. So if you have a raised ranch for instance and it measures out to be 2000 square feet of exterior wall then you have 20 squares and if the job you want cost $650 per square then your Ball Park estimate is $13,000.
